Notification from the Bishops of England and Wales: Return of the Sunday Obligation to attend Mass: In normal circumstances Catholics are obliged to attend Mass every Sunday, and every Holy Day of Obligation. Since March 2020, because of the Covid outbreak the Church has suspended this obligation. From Sunday 5th, Pentecost Sunday; the obligation will be reintroduced.
The Bishops have written and stated that- ”…the pressing challenged of the pandemic have lessened significantly. Most people have resumed the wide range of normal activities…”
They also point out – ”…it has always been the understanding of the Church that when freedom of any Catholic to attend Mass in person is impeded for a serious reason, because of such situations as ill health, care for the sick or legitimate fear, this is not a breach of the Sunday Obligation”.
